Short version: those two conflicting holy water numbers everyone argues about are both right: they're measuring different things. The "fishing gives 70–250 drops a catch" posts are about active World Tree fishing, which v1.0.3 buffed so hard the community suspects a typo. The "don't bother, fishing is a bad conversion" take is about the passive base fishing pond, which genuinely returns almost nothing. And if you want a reliable farm that doesn't depend on a suspected bug, the answer is usually expeditions: normal difficulty, reward multiplier maxed.
Here's what each source actually yields in v1.0.3, how to run the best one, and which numbers to trust.
What Holy Water Is For
Holy Water is an endgame crafting resource, not a breeding input. Its biggest use is awakening: 10 holy water plus 50 Radiant Gems of the matching element craft one awakening crystal. It also feeds Paldium Ingot, drone parts, and the Ancient Relic Recycler. So the demand spikes exactly when you're finishing a build: the moment the perfect-Pal roadmap reaches its last step.
Fishing: Active vs Passive, and the "Extra Zero"
v1.0.3 added holy water to three new sources: World Tree expeditions, World Tree fishing, and the large base fishing pond. That's where the confusion starts, because the two fishing sources behave very differently.
| Activity | Yield | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Active World Tree fishing | Community logs of roughly 70–250 per catch, one logged 308 from a lunker | Currently absurd, suspected "extra zero" — likely to be nerfed |
| Base fishing pond (passive) | About 20–50 holy water for 600 premium baits | Genuinely poor — this is the "don't bother" advice |
Before v1.0.3, active fishing gave maybe 3–5 drops a cast. The patch raised it so far that many players suspect it's an overcorrected value. One widely-shared thread put a single cast at 308 holy water from a lunker and argued it's wrecking the value of every other farm. As of this writing it hasn't been patched, but plan around the possibility it gets tuned down.
So when you see "fishing is amazing" and "fishing is terrible," both are accurate for different activities. Don't build your long-term holy water plan on the active fishing number.
Expeditions: The Reliable Farm (Normal, Not Hard)
The two World Tree expeditions both drop holy water: Subterranean City Ruins (normal, 1h) and Forbidden Area (hard, 2h). The base tables are 12–16 per run at 100% multiplier for normal and 32–38 for hard. With the reward multiplier maxed at 1348%, those become roughly 160–210 per normal run and 430–510 per hard run. The "200+ per run" figure you've seen is the maxed-multiplier normal case, not a base value.
Here's the part that changes the recommendation: hard is not worth it. It takes twice the time for roughly double the yield (so slightly more per hour), but the gate is brutal. Community testing puts hard around 98–100 fully-built Pals to run comfortably, while normal reaches the 1348% tier with about 40 built Pals. That extra per-hour margin isn't worth tripling your roster, and normal drops the more valuable side resource (large Pal souls vs Dog Coins).
That makes normal expedition the answer to "reliable farm": it's idle, low-gate, and consistent. You don't watch it, you just send Pals and collect.
Dusty Ravine: The Active Kill Loop
If you'd rather grind it actively, the World Tree's Dusty Ravine (Chinese guides call it 黄尘峡谷) is the dense-kill route: teleport in, sweep the ravine's electric/neutral packs, loop back. The trick is bringing the right drop-boost partners: Menasting and Menasting Terra (Steel Scorpion on the former, Golden Scorpion on the latter) each raise electric-type drops by 40% at base and up to 80% fully condensed. They're different skills, so both apply at once, and the community routes that pair them are counting on exactly that. Add a dark and a ground booster and you're multiplying the pack drops considerably.
The per-minute numbers vary wildly because they depend on world spawn-rate settings: at default 1x, community tests put it around 60 holy water per minute; at 3x spawn/drop it jumps to 500+. That's a settings-dependent figure, and public servers can't change the multiplier, so on official servers you're stuck with the 1x number.
Which One Should You Run?
| Route | Effort | Yield | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active World Tree fishing | Low, interactive | Highest right now (70–250/catch) | Grab it before it's patched |
| Normal expedition (maxed) | Idle | ~160–210/run, low gate | The daily reliable source |
| Dusty Ravine loop | Active | ~60/min at 1x, 500+/min at 3x | Solo worlds with spawn settings |
| Hard expedition | Idle but extreme gate | ~430–510/run | Only if you already have ~100 built Pals |
| Base fishing pond | Passive | ~20–50 per 600 baits (poor) | Don't bother |
My recommendation: run the normal expedition as the baseline and keep a rod for active fishing while it's still overtuned. If you're on a solo world with spawn-rate control, the Dusty Ravine loop is the fastest active farm. Hard expedition and the base pond are skips.
FAQ
Is fishing the best way to get holy water in 1.0.3?
Active World Tree fishing currently gives a lot (roughly 70–250 per catch) because of a suspected overcorrected value, but it's likely to be patched. The passive base fishing pond is genuinely bad. Don't build your long-term plan on active fishing.
How much holy water does the normal World Tree expedition give?
Base is 12–16 per run; with the reward multiplier maxed at 1348% it becomes roughly 160–210 per run. Hard gives 32–38 base (~430–510 maxed) but needs ~100 built Pals.
What's holy water used for in Palworld?
Mostly awakening — 10 holy water plus 50 Radiant Gems of the matching element craft an awakening crystal. It also feeds Paldium Ingot, drone parts, and the Ancient Relic Recycler.
Where is the best holy water farm in 1.0.3?
Normal World Tree expedition with the multiplier maxed for a reliable idle farm; Dusty Ravine kill loop for active farming on solo worlds; active fishing is strong now but likely to be nerfed.
Why do some guides say fishing is bad for holy water?
They're measuring the base fishing pond, which returns about 20–50 holy water for 600 premium baits — genuinely poor. The "70+ per catch" number is active World Tree fishing, a different activity that v1.0.3 buffed heavily.
Awakening is the last step on a perfect Pal — and the holy water is half the cost. PalForge reads your level.sav locally and shows the full path to your target with the resource costs, so you know exactly how much you're farming for. No uploads, free. Open the calculator →
