In Palworld 1.0, 28 Pals can never come from a mixed pair. Pair two different species and the rank-average formula silently skips them; the only breeding route that produces one of these is two of the same species. Most guides call this "breed-true" or "same-species only," and they usually stop at a list of names. This guide goes one step further: for every one of the 28, where your first copy actually comes from — because "breed two of the same" is only useful after you own the species at all.
The list below is generated from the PalForge breeding matrix (v27-1.0, 44,851 combinations), cross-checked against the 1.0 game data. It's the complete set: 28 breed-true Pals — more than the 22-26 that other tools list — because it includes the gender-locked pair and the Terraria crossover creatures that older lists miss.
What "Breed-True" Means
Every breeding attempt resolves in a fixed order. Two Pals of the same species always breed true — that's rule one. Otherwise the game checks its table of special combinations, then falls back to averaging the parents' hidden breeding power. A Pal is "breed-true only" when it sits on the non-breedable list — the formula is not allowed to produce it, and no mixed pair is hardcoded to it. The only egg that can contain one is from a same-species pair.
In 1.0 that list covers 28 Pals, and they fall into three buckets:
- Legendaries & the old tower bosses — Frostallion, Jetragon, Paladius, Necromus, Shadowbeak, Grizzbolt, Lyleen, Orserk, Faleris. In Early Access some of these could be fused from cheap mixed pairs (Penking + Katress famously gave you a tower boss); 1.0 removed those recipes.
- Raid bosses — Bellanoir Libero, Blazamut Ryu, Xenolord, Hartalis. You raid for the first one, then Libero × Libero (etc.) reproduces the species.
- 1.0 newcomers & specials — Neptilius, Bastigor, Shaolong, Silvance, Dandilord, Selyne, Xenovader, Xenogard, Mimog, Katress Ignis, Wixen Noct, plus the Terraria crossover Pals (Green Slime, Cave Bat) and a Gumoss variant.
The practical rule for all 28: catch or raid the first one, then breed copies from two of the same. The rest of this guide is the "catch or raid" part, because that's where every guide stops being specific.

| Xenovader | #145 | Dark | Meteorite event (nocturnal) — volcanic/desert/snow regions |
| Xenogard | #146 | Dragon | Meteorite event Alpha — Mount Obsidian / Desiccated Dunes / Astral Mountains |
| Mimog | #144 | Neutral | Wild — mimics a chest, high-level regions (up to Lv 80) |
| Katress Ignis | #79 | Dark | Gender-locked: Female Katress × Male Wixen only |
| Wixen Noct | #78 | Fire | Gender-locked: Male Katress × Female Wixen only |
| Green Slime | — | Grass | Terraria dungeon (Yakushima Cavern, Lv 33–35) — no Paldeck number |
| Cave Bat | — | Neutral | Terraria dungeon (Yakushima Cavern, Lv 36–41) — no Paldeck number |
| Gumoss (Flower) | #12 | Grass | Wild variant — the only Gumoss form on the non-breedable list |
Count them: 28 rows. That's the complete 1.0 set — other calculators list 22 to 26 because they skip the gender-locked pair (Katress Ignis / Wixen Noct) and the Terraria crossover creatures (Green Slime / Cave Bat), which also refuse every mixed pair.
Raid-Exclusive: Your First Copy Is a Raid, Not a Catch
Four breed-true Pals can't be caught at all. You craft a slab from four fragments, summon the boss at a Summoning Altar, beat it, and hatch the awarded egg:
| Pal | Raid | Slab fragments | Egg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bellanoir Libero | Twilight Siren (Lv 45 / Ultra 80) | Dungeon chests & high-level content | Huge Dark Egg |
| Blazamut Ryu | Blazamut Ryu raid | Expeditions & late-game chests | Huge Dragon Egg |
| Xenolord | Xenolord raid | Feybreak dungeons & expeditions (clear Bjorn first) | Huge Dark Egg |
| Hartalis | Hartalis raid | Expeditions & high-level rewards | Huge Common Egg |
After the first one, two of the same reproduces the species — Bellanoir Libero × Bellanoir Libero, Xenolord × Xenolord, and so on — which is how you roll passives onto the line. One caveat: raid Pals can't roll Legend (they carry a 30% dual-element boost passive like Invader instead).
Tower Bosses: Capturable Alphas, Now Breed-True
In Early Access you could fuse these from cheap mixed pairs — that's gone in 1.0. Each is now breed-true, and your first copy is the tower boss Alpha you can capture when you clear the fight:
- Grizzbolt — Zoe & Grizzbolt, Tower of the Rayne Syndicate (Lv 10)
- Lyleen — Lily & Lyleen, Free Pal Alliance Tower (Lv 20)
- Orserk — Axel & Orserk, Eternal Pyre Tower, Mount Obsidian (Lv 30)
- Faleris — Marcus & Faleris, Tower of the PIDF (Lv 40), or a wild Lv 80 spawn
- Selyne — Saya & Selyne, Sakurajima center (Lv 55), or meteorite event
Capture the Alpha during (or after) the tower fight, then breed two of the same for your passive lines. Each one is also the source of a unique Legend-adjacent passive — for example Selyne and Shadowbeak are among the few Pals that guarantee a top combat passive on catch.
Wild Alphas & Legendaries: The Catch-and-Breed Loop
These are the classic legendaries plus Shadowbeak — catchable in the wild, breed-true after that:
- Frostallion — wild Alpha at the Astral Mountains summit (~520, -90, Lv 50). Comes with Legend + Ice Emperor innately.
- Jetragon — wild Alpha on Sunreach Island (-553, -1332, Lv 50) — not Mount Obsidian in 1.0. Legend + Divine Dragon on every catch.
- Paladius — wild in a high-level region (up to Lv 60).
- Necromus — wild Lv 60 region; always spawns with Legend + Lord of the Underworld.
- Shadowbeak — wild at the No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary (650, 620, ~Lv 50+).
- Neptilius — wild Alpha at the Isle of the Glacial Core (140, 653, Lv 60); innate Legend + Lunker.
Because these come with Legend and other fixed passives on catch, "catch one, breed two" is strictly better than trying to roll them: a same-species pair keeps the good passives in the pool at the standard 40/30/20/10 inheritance spread.
World Tree Field Bosses & the Gate Boss
The World Tree (1.0's final region) holds four more breed-true Pals that aren't raids and aren't classic legendaries:
- Bastigor (Ice, #191) — wilds around the Boreal Summit, Lv 75–80, roughly 90 mapped spawn points; the best Cooling Lv 8 worker in the game.
- Silvance (Grass, #193) — Lv 78 field Alpha southwest of the World Tree (−1935, 1152, near Shrinespore Root), or a Huge Verdant Egg.
- Dandilord (Grass, #194) — Lv 70 field boss; Planting Lv 8 makes it a keeper even outside breeding.
- Shaolong (Dragon, #192) — wild over the lake near the Sacred Falls Shore fast-travel point, World Tree south.
- Panthalus (Water, #203) — the World Tree gate boss. Talk to the Ancient Civilization Researcher on the Deserted Islet, collect four Echobones (Surf / Silence / Seafoam / Breeze), craft the Echoing Flute, and the fight unlocks.
Special Spawns: Meteorites, Mimics & the Gender-Locked Pair
Three acquisition quirks round out the list:
- Meteorite events — Xenovader (#145) and Xenogard (#146) only appear when a meteorite lands (volcanic, desert and snow regions; Xenogard specifically at Mount Obsidian, the Desiccated Dunes and the Astral Mountains). Xenovader is nocturnal; Xenogard always arrives as an Alpha with a boss HP bar. Shorten the interval with world settings or reroll supply drops.
- Mimog — Mimog (#144) mimics a treasure chest in high-level wilds (up to Lv 80). Hit the chest to reveal it, then capture.
- Gender-locked pair — Katress Ignis (#79) and Wixen Noct (#78) are the only Pals in the game whose offspring depends on the parents' genders: a female Katress with a male Wixen hatches Katress Ignis; swap the genders and you get Wixen Noct. Every other pair in the game ignores gender for the species result.
Terraria Crossover: Green Slime & Cave Bat
The two Terraria creatures on the list (from the Tides of Terraria collab, still in the game in 1.0) have no Paldeck numbers and sit in their own closed breeding pool — no mixed pair with a normal Pal can produce them. Your first copies come from the Terraria dungeon (Yakushima Cavern): Green Slime in the Lv 33–35 band, Cave Bat at Lv 36–41. The dungeon is entered from the Sealed Realm of Terraria, southeast of Fisherman's Point — everything from the collab is permanent content.
FAQ
How many Pals are breed-true in Palworld 1.0?
28, per the PalForge breeding matrix (v27-1.0). Other tools list 22–26 because they miss the gender-locked pair and the Terraria crossover creatures.
Can I catch Shadowbeak, Frostallion or Jetragon in the wild?
Yes — that's how you get the first one. Shadowbeak at No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary, Frostallion at the Astral Mountains summit, Jetragon on Sunreach Island. After that, breed two of the same.
Which breed-true Pals can't be caught at all?
The four raid bosses: Bellanoir Libero, Blazamut Ryu, Xenolord and Hartalis. You beat the raid and hatch the awarded egg; you can't throw a sphere at the boss.
Do the old tower-boss breeding recipes still work in 1.0?
No. Recipes like Penking + Katress → tower boss were removed in 1.0. Grizzbolt, Lyleen, Orserk and Faleris now breed true only — same species or nothing.
Is Katress × Wixen really the only gender-dependent pairing?
Yes — the only one in 1.0. Female Katress × Male Wixen hatches Katress Ignis; Male Katress × Female Wixen hatches Wixen Noct.
Can breed-true Pals appear from mixed breeding?
No — they're on the non-breedable list, so the rank-average formula skips them. Only a same-species pair produces them.
