Short version: the cake you use changes the eggs. In Palworld 1.0 there are four special cakes beyond the base Cake, and each one does something different to what hatches: one boosts IVs, one doubles your egg count, one raises the mutation chance, and one locks your target four passives onto the child. Most guides mention them in passing; here's the full breakdown, with the unlock levels, recipes, effects, and the one trick that's worth planning your whole breeding line around.
The big one is Special Cake, and it's the reason this guide exists: if both parents together carry exactly the four passives you want, the child inherits all four, no re-roll gambling. That's the difference between breeding for a week and breeding until it works.
The Four Cakes at a Glance
| Cake | Unlock | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cake (base) | Level 17 | No special effect — the basic breeding cake |
| Mushroom Cake | Level 30 | Offspring IVs get +1 to +5 |
| Vegetable Cake | Level 47 | Lays two eggs per use |
| Extravagant Vegetable Cake | Level 60 | +1 to +5 IVs, and mutation chance +2pp (1% → ~3%) |
| Special Cake | Level 74 | Inherits 4 parent passives + all active skills |
Recipes: What Each Cake Costs
Every cake needs Flour, and most of them want Milk, Eggs, and Honey — all ranch produce. If you're farming anyway, a ranch lineup of Mozzarina (Milk), Chikipi (Eggs), and Beegarde (Honey) keeps the pipeline running itself.
| Cake | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Cake (base) | 5 Flour, 8 Red Berries, 7 Milk, 8 Eggs, 2 Honey |
| Mushroom Cake | 5 Flour, 5 Mushroom, 3 Cavern Mushroom, 8 Eggs, 2 Honey |
| Vegetable Cake | 8 Flour, 8 Tomato, 7 Lettuce, 8 Eggs, 4 Honey |
| Extravagant Vegetable Cake | 12 Flour, 8 Cotton Candy, 10 Potato, 6 Onion, 8 Carrot |
| Special Cake | 20 Flour, 8 Caramel Cotton Candy, 15 Milk, 15 Eggs, 2 Mammorest Meat |
Recipe amounts from game data (paldb.cc, Game8, Nodecraft). Ingredient names follow in-game English; a few databases list Cotton Candy as "Sweet".
Special Cake: the 4-Passive Inheritance Trick
This is the one worth building around. The Special Cake (Ancient Kitchen, level 74) changes how many passives the child inherits: instead of the usual 1–4 roll, the egg inherits exactly four passives from the parents, plus all their active skills.
Here's how you turn that into a guaranteed four-passive Pal:
- Get the parents to carry exactly the four passives you want, with no extras. If both parents together add up to exactly four unique passives (a 2+2 or 3+1 split), the child inherits all four, and no fifth passive sneaks in.
- If the parents have fewer than four between them, the child inherits what they have plus random filler passives. So the "exactly four" part matters: a parent carrying junk passives will drag them into the pool.
- Active skills carry over too. Keep the three skills you want on each parent: the child inherits all three from each side, up to six active skills total.
The community has confirmed this from both sides, and it's consistent across the sources we checked (Bahamut's 7/19 breakdown, PalMods' mutation lab, and Palpedia's breeding guide all describe the same rule): the clean-pool method, keeping parents free of junk passives, is what makes Special Cake reliable. If your parents are clean, Special Cake is effectively a guaranteed four-passive hatch. If they're polluted, it just locks in the pollution.
One thing to note: a couple of guides claim Special Cake can transfer up to six passives. That contradicts the four-slot cap and the "exactly four" testing most sources report. The "six" almost certainly comes from active skills, not passives: each parent carries three, so a child can inherit up to six active skills total. As passives, the cap stays four.
One more thing before you commit a line: which four passives you lock in matters as much as the lock itself. Attack passives look big on paper but dilute hard once your build stacks attack bonuses, while elemental passives hold their value — the passive dilution guide has the measured numbers for Twin-Edged Holy Blade, Demon God, and the elemental lines. Special Cake locks in whatever four you choose, so choose the ones that actually perform.
Mushroom Cake: IV Farming
Mushroom Cake (level 30, basic Cooking Pot) boosts the offspring's IVs by +1 to +5. It's the cheapest way to nudge a breeding line toward better stats, and because it unlocks early, it's the IV tool you actually have during most of the game.
Where it fits: early-to-mid game, when you're breeding a Pal you plan to use for a while and you want slightly better stats without committing to the endgame IV grind. It's not a substitute for proper IV handling — those come from high-IV parents and Stat Fruits — but it tilts the rolls in your favor.
Vegetable Cake: Double Eggs
Vegetable Cake (level 47, Electric Kitchen) lays two eggs per use. On the mutation side, each egg rolls independently, so two eggs per batch works out to roughly a 2% per-batch mutation chance rather than 1%; one guide treats the pair as a single roll, so treat that as "about 2%, maybe less."
Where it fits: volume. When you're churning out Pals for condensation (48 copies total to reach four stars), or grinding toward a rare passive by brute force, the second egg per batch halves your time. It's the workhorse cake for quantity.
Extravagant Vegetable Cake: Mutations
Extravagant Vegetable Cake (level 60, Large-Scale Stone Oven) is the only cake that raises the mutation chance: it adds about +2 percentage points, taking the base ~1% per egg to roughly 3%. It also gives the +1 to +5 IV bonus that Mushroom Cake does.
This is the cake for the mutation grind — mutated eggs hatch as Alphas with 90–100 IVs, two-star condensation, and rainbow passives. If you're specifically hunting a mutation-exclusive passive, this is the cake to feed. (Beware the naming: guides also call it "Deluxe" or "Exquisite" Vegetable Cake; same item.)
Where Each Cake Fits in the Breeding Flow
The four cakes map neatly onto the perfect-Pal breeding order — species → passives → IVs → condensation → awakening:
| Stage | Cake | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lock the passives | Special Cake | Guarantees the four-passive package |
| Nudge the IVs | Mushroom Cake | +1 to +5 IVs on the next hatch |
| Build quantity (condensation) | Vegetable Cake | Two eggs per use — 48 copies come faster |
| Hunt mutations / awakening fodder | Extravagant Vegetable Cake | 3% per egg + high IVs for awakening material |
In practice you'll cycle: Mushroom to improve the line early, Vegetable to mass-produce condensation fodder, Special to seal the four-passive final, and Extravagant if you're chasing a mutation. They're not competing — they're stages of the same build.
FAQ
What does Special Cake do in Palworld 1.0?
It makes the egg inherit exactly four passives from the parents, plus all their active skills. If the parents carry exactly the four you want, the child is a guaranteed four-passive Pal.
Which cake increases mutation chance?
Only the Extravagant Vegetable Cake, adding about +2 percentage points to the base ~1% (to roughly 3% per egg). Mushroom, Vegetable, and Special cakes don't change the mutation rate.
Does Vegetable Cake give more eggs?
Yes — it lays two eggs per use instead of one. Each egg still rolls independently for mutations, so a batch is about 2% chance at a mutation versus 1% for a single egg.
What is Mushroom Cake for?
It boosts the offspring's IVs by +1 to +5, making it the early-game way to improve stats before you have access to the deeper IV tools.
When should I use Special Cake vs Extravagant Vegetable Cake?
Special Cake when you want a guaranteed four-passive hatch (endgame final Pal). Extravagant Vegetable Cake when you're hunting a mutation-exclusive passive or need high-IV awakening fodder.

Sources: community testing and game data (Bahamut 7/19, ptt543 8/20, PalMods mutation lab, Palpedia breeding guide, paldb.cc cake pages, Game8). Special Cake's 4-passive inheritance is confirmed by multiple sources including PalMods and Palpedia; the "6 passives" claim in some guides is treated as a data error. Mutation percentages are community-measured.
